Southampton eying a move for Liverpool’s Fabio Carvalho

Southampton and other Championship clubs are closing in on a deal for Fabio Carvalho after his loan at RB Leipzig was terminated

Fabio Carvalho transfer news: Southampton are among the handful of Championship sides who are working on landing the young and promising Portuguese star from Anfield. His services are believed to be the catalysts of their promotion back to the Premier League.

The young Portuguese was bought by Liverpool in the summer of 2022 from Fulham but has since seen limited game time under Jurgen Klopp – a loan deal was probably the best move in the interests of all parties involved.

In the summer of 2023, he agreed to move to RB Leipzig on a season-long loan but to the peril of his own ambitions, he found very little game time there. He could only make 15 appearances and just started in 3 of them – getting a mere total of 360 minutes of action on the pitch.

Fabio Carvalho was recalled from his loan spell in RB Leipzig but was told that he is not in Liverpool’s plans in the near future. However, it was also said that he is not up for sale and the Reds were only looking to have him up for loan – this sparked a considerable amount of interest from Championship sides looking to acquire his services.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, one of the main icebreakers in every coming deal is an incontrovertible guarantee that the young boy gets good game time. The German manager still has faith in the 21-year-old and is keen on seeing him grow.

Prior to his loan move to RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023, he discussed a few things with some of the senior players and had this to say:

“I spoke to a few players and they just told me to keep going, keep working, and things would happen. I think that’s my mindset, to keep working as hard as I can and things will happen.”

“Regarding players, I spoke to James Milner, the captain Jordan Henderson, Joe Gomez, and Trent as well.”

Poor Run at RB Leipzig

Things didn’t go as planned for the young lad who claims that he didn’t actually understand what Leipzig’s manager Marco Rose wanted from him. Lack of Gametime was also one of the most popular reasons as to why he was recalled from loan and was upset about the entire situation himself.

In the Bundesliga alone, he made 9 total appearances and only started one game, getting only 21 minutes per game. He had little to no influence in those games, tallying an xG of just 0.22 across all nine games. His XA was only one-tenths higher than his expected goals at 0.24 and in all of his nine appearances, he could only tally 14 touches per game.

Does he lack the quality or that cutting edge to be a top player? Surely not, he is still very young, and with the passage of time, he will probably find his footing, especially with the right amount of game time.

The Best Solution for Fabio Carvalho

After Klopp disclosed that he was not in his future plans and that Liverpool had no intentions of offloading him for sale, what could be the best solution for the young and aspiring Fabio Carvalho? It seems we may need to have faith in big man Klopp’s plans again.

A loan to a Championship side or a mid-table side in the Premier League might actually do him the world of good for his confidence and to reinvigorate that lost spark in him. Not only will he gain experience but will slowly begin performing under pressure with less mental resistance. This is usually what separates the top players from the less-mentioned and mediocre ones.

Do you think a loan spell in a Championship side might bring his career back on track or is there a better solution?
