Jeremie Frimpong’s Early Life

 Jeremie Agyekum Frimpong was born on December 10, 2000, in the vibrant streets of Amsterdam, Netherlands. Surprisingly, Jeremie has lived in the United Kingdom for more than half of his life, despite him being Dutch and his parents’ Ghanaian background. Jeremie was the fifth child out of seven and used to live in a small three-bedroom apartment before eventually moving into a larger home provided by the Dutch government.

6-year-old Frimpong and his family would later move to the UK in 2007 after his mum and dad separated. His mother, Bernice took the Frimpongs to the UK with the thought of her children getting a better education. Jeremie was extremely passionate about football from a young age and enjoyed spending his free time playing video games just like any other child of his age. He completed his basic education at Ravensbury Primary School where he initially did not speak English. Jeremie would make friends by letting his skills with the ball do the talking. He was so good that he always played with the older students which caused his mum to worry that they might break young Jeremie’s legs.

Jeremie Frimpong’s mother, Bernice Frimpong had to make countless sacrifices to raise her kids well. After separating from Jeremie’s father whose details are unknown, she had to work many shifts so that she could put food on the table of her seven children. As the only parent, Bernice used to work as a cleaner and although money was tight, she never let her children go to bed with an empty stomach.

She was extremely supportive of Jeremie’s football career and used to accompany him for 3 bus trips every day for his training sessions. Bernice would pick up Jeremie after his training sessions surprising him with his favorite food, chicken and chips. 

Fun fact: Even now, Jeremie Frimpong still loves his childhood’s favorite meal, chicken and chips.

Jeremie Frimpong was fortunate to grow up alongside 6 siblings(3 brothers and 3 sisters) meaning he never had to worry about lively company throughout his childhood. All of his siblings have their own unique stories with Jeremie growing up.

Frimpong’s older brother, Jeffrey used to create incentives so that Frimpong would always give it his all on the football pitch. He talked about his brother in an interview, “I used to tell him, ‘You score this amount of goals, I’ll buy you this, I’ll take you there”. Frimpong like every child was into video games at a young age. This gave Jeffrey the opportunity to further motivate him by saying, “If you score three goals, then Mum and I will put money towards buying you a PS3”. 

Jeremie’s older sister Nana revealed a funny experience with Jeremie where she said, “He would literally use everything as a football. One day, he was playing football with a spoon or something and he accidentally broke the telly. My mum got really angry, so we spoke to him about playing in the house. But it was like speaking to a wall because of his love of football.”

Frimpong Career

Jeremy Frimpong began his football journey at a local team in Clayton when he was just 8 or 9 years old. Age was just a number for Jeremie as he managed to score roughly 50 goals each season for Clayton despite his tender age.

Jeremie began attracting some big names in England as a teenager with his exceptional footballing ability. He revealed, “I played so well I suddenly had Liverpool, Man City, Bolton and Blackburn after me. They were all speaking to my parents and it was a big thing for a young kid.”

Frimpong ultimately decided to kickstart his professional career at Manchester City’s youth setup. This is where he developed a firm foundation for his skills and learned the intricacies of the sport. Frimpong began making a name for himself and was promoted to City’s U18 squad in 2016. He would then be promoted to City’s U23 squad in the span of just 2 years.

Although Frimpong’s career was on the rise, it was becoming clear that he was not a part of City’s future plans. This led him to leave the “citizens” and join Celtic in 2019.

Jeremie himself revealed that he initially didn’t want to join Celtic but his brother and agent convinced him to make the move. This would turn out to be a great decision as Frimpong’s transfer to Celtic marked the beginning of his meteoric rise. 

After just 51 appearances in his 2 year spell at Celtic, Jeremie earnt a move to German giants, Bayer 04 Leverkusen in 2021 for a transfer fee of 11 million euros. He is now one of Leverkusen’s most important players in their rejuvenation orchestrated by Xabi Alonso. Although Jeremie had to change his role to a midfielder, he has adapted to the new position exceptionally well.
