AS Roma Sacks Jose Mourinho: Jose Mourinho’s third-season curse persists and it seems there’s no end to it as Roma have officially parted ways with the Special One. Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester United and now Roma are all on the list of the notorious ‘Third Season Calamity.’
Roma have won only one of their last six league games and the frustration doesn’t just end there, they were kicked out of the Supercoppa Italia by local rivals Lazio, where he was even sent off.
They currently sit ninth with 29 points, which is 22 points away from league leaders Inter Milan. This just goes to show how bad the situation was for the Giallorossi.
Former Captain and club legend Danielle de Rossi has been announced as the immediate replacement, despite Antonio Conte and Graham Potter being considered as strong candidates for the job.
Mourinho’s Legacy in Rome
AS Roma Sacks Jose Mourinho
Regardless of the bitter end, the Special One still had a pretty special stint with the AS Roma. Of a total of 138 games played where he managed, his side secured 68 wins and registered 39 losses.
The two-time UCL winner, Jose Mourinho guided Roma to a Conference League triumph in the 2021/22 season and even guided them to a Europa League final last season but just came short of Sevilla on penalties.
It must be noted that although the decision may have looked to be hasty but according to Sky Italy, the discussions over parting ways had taken place between Mourinho’s camp and the owners much earlier. In an official statement given by AS Roma, they had the following to say:
“We would like to thank Jose on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club.
“We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club.
“We wish Jose and his assistants all the best in their future endeavors.”
What’s next for Jose Mourinho?
A big-money move to the Saudi League was turned down by the Special One in the summer so it is very likely we may see those rumors get rekindled.
A return to the Premier League is something fans would love to see since it’s very well-known that Jose Mourinho turns good teams into great teams and good players into great players.
Sky News Reporter Gary Cotterill had the following to say:
“He has always been linked with a return to Real Madrid. He and Florentino Perez remain close. But Carlo Ancelotti is now staying at Real Madrid.
“We know that Roy Hodgson is leaving Crystal Palace in the summer. Will they go for Gareth Southgate with his history here? Would that free up the England job? I’ve heard his name mentioned in some phone-in programs, fans saying he would be great for it.
“And there’s Chelsea. When they were looking for a new manager in the summer, I was of the understanding that Mourinho wouldn’t turn down a chance to return for a third time, although it looks like the ownership has got a different direction these days.”
The Homecoming of Danielle de Rossi
Despite being named as the interim manager, there still seems to be a reasonable amount of buzz around De Rossi’s return to Roma. He has signed a contract until June and if things go right, there’s a very high probability that we might see a De Rossi revolution in Rome.
His mettle as a manager will be put to the test against Hellas Verona, who currently sit in the relegation zone. Roma are expected to pick all three points given their opponent’s poor form.
De Rossi’s elation knew no bounds as he had the following to say:
“I would like to thank the Friedkin family for entrusting me with the responsibility of Roma’s head coach role. From my side, I know no other way but dedication, daily sacrifices, and giving everything I have to face the challenges that await us from now until the end of the season.
“The excitement of being able to sit on our bench is indescribable. Everyone knows what Roma means to me. However, the work that awaits us all has already taken precedence. We have no time or choice but to be competitive, fight for our goals, and try to achieve them, which are the only priorities my staff and I have set for ourselves.”
